Daybook: The Ice Storm Cometh Edition (Jan. 31,...
Outside my window…it’s gray with a bit of snow on the ground. Ice, snow, and, apparently, the end of Civilization as We Know It are expected tonight through tomorrow…. I am wearing: A teal blue cowl-neck sweater dress from Kohl’s; socks (I had black boots on earlier) I am reading: Wench, Mary Poppins, Incendiary, The Hidden Face, The Return of the Native (yes, it’s...

Best Picture Update II
The Social Network: Notes: Andrew Garfield is both hot and an incredible actor. I would see Never Let Me Go just for him, and I hate Keira Knightly movies with a passion. I can also see how Garfield was once considered a favorite for Edward Cullen in Twilight. Yes, please! The music/score is awful. The scoring for the facemash sequence made me want to scream. UGH. Worst score I have ever...

Best Picture Update!
Winter’s Bone: Good, but I didn’t think it was especially Best Picture-ish. It’s a small, dark, artsy film about Dee Holly (Jennifer Lawrence), a 17 year old whose father has disappeared after being charged with meth cooking. When the family’s house is threatened if her father doesn’t appear in court, Dee begins to dig into the meth cooking business in the Missouri...

The Piano: Piano Tip #6 - Be Patient and you will... →
thepiano: This is for all you beginners out there. The best thing you can do for your growth as a piano player is BE PATIENT. I know this from experience. When I first started playing piano, I wanted to start playing good music as soon as possible. So I rushed to transcribe some of my favorite Jazz…

Oscar Nomination Day!
Oscar Nomination Day! Hurray! I am going to list the major races, plus animated film (because those are what I care about), going in the order they were announced (so Best Picture is last). But I will say, at the top, that I am really peeved that Toy Story 3 got TWO best picture nods—in animated film, and in best picture. And why wasn’t Tangled nominated for the former category? ...

How to cut flowers
The flowers my parents got me for Earnest opening night In college, my boyfriend was up on flower-cutting. Since he worked in a cemetery, you would imagine he knows a bit about keeping flower arrangements looking decent. Anyway, here’s what he taught me about keeping flowers looking nice (and I can get a bouquet to last at least a week). As soon as you get home, get them in water. (or...

Not-so-Black Swan - Winnipeg Free Press →
I thought this was a very good response from a professional ballerina to Black Swan. Sure, not all dancers are like Nina—she is, after all, a character, and some people forget that. Here’s a real dancer telling us about her life. And she hits the nail on the head in the last graph—live theater, ballet, music—no re-dos. No second takes. It’s scary, and awesome.

Seven Quick Takes Friday--Vol. III
So….y’all are probably wondering where I went. I went to the Resort, for five days of in-house hospital fun! It started on Friday at midnight, right after the second Earnest show…I went to go to sleep and then, bam, realized that my heart was going a bit too fast. Checked it with the pulse ox and…it was 180. Oh. joy. So that meant calling dad and going to the ER, because...

Renee Week: Dark Hope →
This is the most fantastic. CD. ever. Really! I give this to everyone! Not only is a great recording, but it’s also a great way for non-opera people to experience the power of the operatic voice in a more mainstream setting. I am hopeful that people who like this disc will head to her other English language discs, as well!

Eating Local, eating at home
So today, in the midst of snow, I went to the North Market looking for some Ohio deliciousness. And I found it! Today’s small local haul: Snowville Creamery fat free milk (Athens, OH). Let me tell you about this milk. It is the best milk you will ever have in your life! And you can get it other places, too! Not just Ohio (They send milk to Cincy and Cleveland, as well as Columbus)! This was the first Renee CD I bought, and the rest is history. She’s singing Broadway pieces here with Welsh opera star Bryn Terfel. And man, do they sing Broadway! This disc is a must have for any opera/musical theater/music lover. Some of the best tracks are “Stars”, “Not While I’m Around”, “All I Ask of You”, “Wheels of a Dream”,...

Renee Week: I Want Magic! →
In Honor of Renee Fleming Week (I’m going to see her on Sunday, weather permitting!), I will be posting my favorite Renee CDs/ DVDs all week. Enjoy! This one makes the list because she’s singing songs in English. Plus, a lot of these are relatively unknown, but gorgeous (!), pieces, so it’s a good way to ease into opera without a lot of preconceptions. She’s backed by the...

You’ll notice a few changes ‘round here… First, snow! Yes, it’s winter, and I like snow on my blog. Not on the ground. But here’s OK. A Nice Cup of Tea by George Orwell →
My college boyfriend would have loved this article (heck, he might even have read it). Before we dated, he dated an English lass, and, as such, was All About The Right Way To Make Tea. He instructed me in the correct method, although we never had loose tea—we used tea bags. (Which Orwell would detest). Also, the appropriate introduction of ‘condiments’ (milk, cream, sugar) into...
