Halloween Past
Halloween was duly celebrated in my house, but I was never a huge fan. I liked it, don’t get me wrong, but I didn’t live for Halloween. After about sixth grade, it got dull, and I stopped after 8th grade.  But I did have some fun costumes. The few that I remember:  A witch (avec mask)  Little Red Riding Hood—my mom made the cape. I had a red dress w/ a fluffy underskirt (a...

Places to go...
On my “see before I die” list:  England/Scotland/Ireland, esp. the Jane Austen tour of England Hawaii Italy—several trips. :)  I’d like to go skiing, somewhere. But the Rockies sound nice. :)

Simple Woman's Daybook--October 24, 2011
Outside my window…well, can’t really tell because my blinds are drawn. But it looks sort of cloudy from what I can tell. :)  I am thinking…glad my stomach is cooperating now! Also, that Once Upon A Time last night was really good. I now have something to enjoy about Sunday nights. If you didn’t see it, the general gist can be found here. (I think you can even watch the...

A Tumblr Meme :)
Well, OK, not really,b ut I like some of these Qs:  A: What is your life ambition? To get to heaven. Other than that—to get the memoir on paper. :)  B: Have you ever been beat up? Have you beat anyone else up? Nope. I did hit a girl with a paperback book one day in elementary school, though.  C: Last time you cried? Last week D: Are you afraid of death? No. “To die would be an...

Concert Review: CSO and Rachel Barton Pine,...
Tonight was the first CSO Masterworks concert at the Southern Theater—yes, that’s a change for you long-time CSO fans. This year, Maestro Zeitouni is having four concerts at the smaller theater, in order to take advantage of its great acoustics and share its music in a  more intimate setting. Having never been to the Southern, I was very happy with the classical decor and design...

10 years...
10 years ago today, I was 19 years old.  I was engaged. I was a sophomore in college.  9/11 had happened a little more than a month ago. We were fighting the war in Afghanistan.  And I was in the PICU—and doctors had given up on me.  Well apparently, the “giving up” part was yesterday, according to my mom (who has a strange brain ability to remember all these things).  ...

Brilliance
OK, yes, I have an iPhone. (No, it’s not the 4i, it’s the 4—I got it about a week before the new one came out. I wanted it cheaply. :) )  And yes, I’m sort of an Apple freak (for example, I’m writing this on my MacBook).  But if you have a CI, you owe it to yourself to check out the iPhone. I can, for the first time since my surgery, actually make phone calls and...

Little Seal
If you haven’t read—or heard of—the blog Our Little Seal, you need to pop over and read it. Emily Rapp writes about her son, Ronan, who has Tay-Sachs, which, in the genetic disease suckiness lottery, is REALLY high on the charts. Not that CF was a picnic, but at least my mind wasn’t affected. I could walk, talk, see, eat, understand. I could, after a certain point, assume...

Hey, people?
If you haven’t already (or, like my sister, are allergic to it)…. GET YOUR FLU SHOT. OK, now I know, a lot of you “never get the flu.”  You don’t want it. Trust me. I’ve had it once, and it was less severe because I had the vaccine, and it was STILL very unfun.  The 1918 flu epidemic killed healthy people. Lots of them. Lots of young, healthy people. ...

Seven Quick Takes Friday
Even though it’s not Friday anymore…still gonna quick take. :)  A beautiful and blustery day here. Making chicken for lunch and then going for a walk. When it’s sunny, you gotta take advantage of it before Ohio winter sets in. Sort of have a cold…but it could just be my sinuses being dumb, as they are prone to do. Feeling better post-shower, which is always happy. I keep...

Say whaaaa?
OK, this is an Emily Rant.  If you are a smoker, and your lungs suck, then I DO NOT want to see you on a transplant list. Full stop. I know you can quit smoking and then they’ll evaluate you, or whatever. But I don’t think that smokers should get new lungs. They screwed up their first set, so why give them a second?  Yes, I know, they can quit smoking. I know that alcoholics have to...

Weekend Rewind
Yes, I know, I did the Daybook first and this second…out of order. :)  FRIDAY: Friday was spent in the ‘Burgh as the last day of vacation. It was my cousin Brendan’s 8th birthday, so his mom had a party for him and his younger brother, Justin, whose birthday is really in August, but he’s three, so he wasn’t really aware. :)  Justin’s wearing the crown Brendan...

The Simple Woman's Daybook--October 9, 2011
Outside my window…getting dark—the porch lights are on (I do love my porch light!)  I am thinking…iPHONE!!! (I just got one.) Huzzah! I am thankful for…improvements that make it easier for me to communicate w/ the CI. (Although I still have to figure out mic placement…) From the kitchen…lots of options! Probably a carbonara this week, but also Williamsburg...

I'm back!
At Chowing’s Tavern, sporting my mob cap. :)  It was a great trip. I learned a lot and had an awesome time living in the 18th century for a few days.  I’ll be having several posts here and also on the Felicity blog about the trip, with photos, food, recipes, and more.  But I just wanted to start with—I’m back!
