Emily Cooks: Shrimp and Beer
The Outer Banks of NC are one of my favorite places on earth—perhaps my total favorite. This recipe is from The Outer Banks Cookbook, by Elizabeth Wiegand, and it always brings back memories of summer at the beach. 2lbs. shrimp, unpeeled 1 12-oz. beer (NOT light) 1 c. water 1 med. onion, sliced 1 lemon or lime, sliced 4 garlic cloves, slivered 1 bunch parsley, coarsely chopped ...

Disclaimer: I had a double-lung transplant, not a kidney transplant. But I’m commenting anyway. I’m sort of ambivalent about this. First off, no one is equal in transplant. Someone is always a better medical match. Someone always has that edge. Second, even if people were COMPLETELY equal (which is far-fetched), some people are better suited for transplant. They have the ability,...

The Simple Woman's Daybook--Feb. 21, 2011
(random prompts!) Outside my window…it’s snowing. Sigh. It was raining for most of the day, and I was hoping it would stay that way. I don’t want more snow! I want spring! I am thinking…I sort of wish we were doing the ablation this week, as scheduled, so I could cross it off my list. But now it’s not until May, because my heart rhythm is normal now (for the...

Seven Quick Takes Friday--Vol. IV
It has been BEAUTIFUL here this week. The snow is gone! My windows have been opened! Bring on the spring! We will probably get a few more cold/snow days, but I can feel that “winter’s on the wing.” Whew. I really hope I didn’t just jinx spring with that… Long weekend for me, but not really. On M I have doc appointments—lung t/x at 7:00, and the cardiology at...

Opera Review: Armida (2010, MetOpera, DVD)
Rossini tells the story of Armida, a sorceress who tempts the Christian paladin army during the Crusades. She manages to ensnare their best warrior, Rinaldo, and it takes several men to break her enchantements over him and make him return to war. Magic, passionate music, and sensuous singing from Renee Fleming and her five tenors make this a brilliant production. Prioduction drected by Mary...

Today's DVD: Armida
Renee Fleming and SIX tenors in Armida—last season was the Met’s premiere of Rossini’s work for woman and six men. Wow. Six tenors. Also devils, ballet, dancing cupids, and crusaders. This is bel canto opera at its most extravagant! I’ve been waiting for this DVD for awhile (I was dying to see the premier last year, but didn’t quite work out…) so when I got...

Um...happy Valentine's Day?
Apparently, my karma did not get the memo that today was a holiday. First off, I’m single. A day that celebrates love is not exactly high on my list of happy things right now. And people who say, “Oh, I remember when I was single and I hated it too…so I understand.” Whatever. You’re not single anymore, so can it! (yeah, I’m sort of bitter here. A bit.)  Then...

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
I’m using that quote as the post title because impedence studies (formerly known as pH probe tests) are a relic left over from the Spanish Inquisition…ugh, ugh, and more ugh. Seriously, never again. I’m going to be 30 soon, and I have had it with this test, so I say no more! I am asserting my patient rights! I’m kidding. Sort of. Here’s the deal. So I was...

Where did I disappear to NOW? Back into the Resort. Yes. It’s getting to be a sad pattern. Apparently my heart still wants to cause trouble so after a weekend of false alarms I’m here to do more fun heart stuff. Went to the ER Sunday night, cardioverted Monday AM, moved from CTICU today (back on C5), and will get discharged on Thursday after I finish a course of drugs tomorrow. See...

Slip and Slide
That just about describes the conditions of my parking lot, my street, and my car this morning. I don’t have a garage, so my car is exposed to the elements. Today, the elements include a few inches of ice coating on my Civic. While I got the side windows fairly clear, and the back window clear, the front windshield was caked with ice, and thus, not usable—or safe!— for driving....
