Weekend Rewind X--Memorial Day
Friday: Kicked off Memorial Day with some local theater—Columbus Civic’s (where I did Earnest) production of Hamlet, which was EPIC. Fantastic cast, and great work by the entire company, especially Ben (Hamlet), Brit (Gertrude), John (Horatio) and Sarah (Ophelia). EPIC work. Probably the best local production I have ever seen (that I haven’t been in, natch). So if you live in...

Emily Cooks: Mirin-glazed salmon
From Nigella Express. NOTE: If you don’t have mirin, you can use white wine/sugar in this ratio: 1/4 tsp. sugar for every 1/4 c. white wine. Yummy, and it took less than 15 minutes, start to finish. Not kidding. Ingredients 1/4 c. mirin (see note) 1/4 c. light brown sugar (or tbsp. splenda brown sugar blend) 1/4 c. soy sauce 4 4 oz. salmon fillets (this also works equally well...

SUMMER! SUMMER! “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!” So in this Quick Takes, I’m going to give you seven (well, six) things that I am going to do as an homage. Read my new Shape magazine next to an open window and listen to birds chirp. Go swimming! Start the annual Jane Re-Read: Sense and Sensibility. Tonight. Oh yes. :) See lots of summer theater! Hey, captioning people?
DO. NOT. ABBREVIATE. THE. LINES. Sorry for the all-caps, but this is important. Especially in classic films! I just started watching The Wizard of Oz (for the, oh, 5,662,737th time….). I’ve been watching this movie since before I was 2 years old. Consequently, I don’t really need the captions. I know it by heart. So don’t give me some claptrap captioning! That’s...

The Simple Woman's Daybook--May 23, 2011
Outside my window…a really terrific thunderstorm this morning gave way to a beautiful day, sunny and blue skied. The birds are in full chorus in the trees out back. I am thinking…that this weather is really lovely; that A Star Is Born is a fantastic movie. (The Judy Garland one) I am thankful for…my friends and my family; the start of summer in Ohio From the kitchen…a...

Weekend Rewind IX, part II
So, to continue… Saturday Afternoon/Evening: Took a nap when I got home, then had a light dinner. Then went to Staples and Target, and came home to mark some of my music books (before they had a bunch of random post-it notes; now I’m putting in decent tabs, where I can write the names of the songs, so everything’s easier to find). I watched some of Gotterdamerung, because...

Weekend Rewind IX, part I
Yes, there will be TWO parts, because this is a LONG weekend rewind… Friday: Friday after work, I went to an apartment/townhouse/condo neighborhood in Gahanna to check out new apartments! Yes, I am going to move sometime this summer, so this is the first step. T and her husband live here, so that was part of the attraction, but it’s also closer to work, church, and a BalletMet...

Conclusion of Pulm Rehab
Today, I finished the Pulm Rehab program I’ve been doing for the past few months at NCH. The last day is “same as the first”—6 minute walk, measurements, etc. The numbers are compared to get concrete feedback. We already knew I’d improved somewhat, since my PFTs were so much better, but we needed this data, too. Among the numbers: *Walked 100 ft. more in this 6...

Local food: Lucky Penny Farm Chevre
I am a sucker for artisan/locally produced Cheese. I really should try to make my own one of these days (Maybe once I have a bigger kitchen!). And today, I found a REALLY great one: Lucky Penny Farm’s Chevre. Oh. my. gosh. It’s tart and smooth and really, fantastically wonderful. So flavorful. You can eat it right out of the tub (not that I’m doing that, or...

The Simple Woman's Daybook--May 16, 2011
Outside my window…it’s cold. Like maybe 50. Last week it was in the upper 80s. Dear Weather Systems: Please give me something in, I dunno, the 70s. Springlike. Not late Fall or Late Summer, please! I am thinking…about things to be done this week. Audition song to pick, a speech to prepare, summer plans to make… I am thankful for…my family, a heater that works,...

Weekend Rewind VIII
Friday: Dinner with my parents at Romeo’s pizza, then home to take a bath and read some of Throne of Fire before bed—which was late tonight (11:45ish) because I watched Stephanie of the Nie Nie Dialogues tell the story of her plane crash, incredible burns, and recovery on 20/20. She is such an inspiration. I’ve had one tiny part of my body burned, and it was a massive undertaking...

Cheap 'n Chic: Gingham mugs
I first saw these mugs in the latest Summer With Matthew Mead, in the Nie Nie throws a party spread. I thought they only came in the green color that was featured there, but I liked them enough to check them out when I was at my local Crate and Barrel tonight. As you can see from this link, they come in four different colors! Squee! Including the one above, which I have christened the Dorothy...

Radio Silence?
Sorry, gang, for the radio silence, but this week was a sort of grumpy one. :) The writing muses were not with me, but now I’m back with some randoms…. *REHAB UPDATE: One day left of rehab—on Tuesday. Adventures in Cooking
Tonight, I am venturing into unknown territory—Indian cooking. How, you may ask, did I get here, an Italian/Germany/Scots-Irish girl? From Jamie’s Food Revolution. See, in this great cookbook (really, really awesome cookbook), he has an entire chapter on curries, which I gather is a big thing in England (hmmm maybe the occupation of India for 100+ years has something to do with it?)....

Review: BalletMet/Shadowbox Cabaret's Seven Deadly...
I’ve seen a lot  of great things at BalletMet. But I think the best thing I ever saw was tonight, when Carrie West and Jimmy Orrante draped themselves in spaghetti (prop, folks, relax) and danced in James Kudelka’s “Gluttony”, the final number in BalletMet and Shadowbox Cabaret’s Seven Deadly Sins. Really, you haven’t lived until you’ve seen that...

Happiness!
So I got my June Real Simple today, and I’m featured on page 28! The magazine asked, “What is your favorite book series?” and I replied with Alexander McCall Smith’s Isabel Dalhousie books. Although McCall Smith is better known for his No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, I find Isabel equally irresistible. My answer was one of the five selected and printed in the magazine....

Clinic updates....
Yesterday I had post-tx clinic and cardiology clinic. The highlights: Pulmonary: PFTs up some more—63% FEV1 and 89% for gas diffusions. Both are up and nice and high, makes us all happy. :) Prednisone reduced to 5 mg, which should help with both appetite and crazy steroid side effects, although I have been very lucky there and not had very many of the super-crazy ones (like facial hair...

For parents: Raising kids with chronic illness
So now that I’m (gulp) a year out from 30, I think I can safely say my parents are done “raising” me. And let me tell ya, that was NOT an easy job. Besides the fact that I drove my kindergarten teacher crazy, was regularly reprimanded for “unnecessary talking” and ran around like I’d just had 10  Mountain Dews in quick succession….oh, and two other...
